Fear, Faith & Love – Day 20

Finding Peace

Many years ago, my mother hand copied on a 3 by 5 notecard a prayer for me, that she had found somewhere.  This was at a time before cellphones and personal computers, or at least before she ever became aware of them. So she put the card in an envelope and mailed it to me, or gave it to me when I came to town for a visit. I don’t remember the details, but it must have been during a time which found me worrying about something. Which I have done frequently in my life…

Anyway, that notecard spent years tucked in the corner of my bedroom dresser mirror, and eventually was moved, and misplaced.

In this time of COVID-19 pandemic, because of near instant news reports, we are faced with frustration, isolation, misinformation and fear. It seemed the perfect time to see if I could find that prayer again, as it gave me a sense of peace during many times of disquiet in my life. And thanks to the internet, and the fact that I never forgot the name of the author, I found it again.

Saint Francis de Sales wrote:

Do not look forward in fear to the changes and chances of this life;
     Rather, look to them with full confidence that, as they arise,
     God, to whom you belong, will in His love enable you to profit by them.
     He has guided you thus far in life, and He will lead you safely through all trials;
     And when you cannot stand it, God will bury you in His arms.

     Do not fear what may happen tomorrow;
     The same everlasting Father who cares for you today,
     Will take care of you then and every day.
     He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.

     Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.  Amen

God of the ages and today, help us to be patient and full of hope in all things; to remember that you are in charge and hold us in your loving embrace, now and forever.  Amen.
