Central Church has sought to be a 'servant church' -- serving God and neighbor. Today, as in years past, Central is fully engaged in serving its community by offering a place of worship, rest, spiritual refreshment and nurture.
Since 1970 Central Church has operated a food pantry that provides several sacks of groceries and fresh produce to approximately 120 households in the 64109 zip code each month. The major distribution takes place on Wednesday mornings (8am-11am) when pantry patrons may also select items of clothing from the extensive Clothes Closet.
Holidays are a time for extra meat distributions and the gifting of new warm outerwear.
Several groups make use of our building space on a regular basis:
We provide rehearsal space for the Mid America Freedom Band, Kansas City's LGBT volunteer band. The band performs in concert and plays at many functions annually as ambassadors for Kansas City's LGBT community.
We are the site of monthly Hyde Park Neighborhood Association meetings (3rd Tuesdays, 7 p.m.).
Our building space is made available for occasional needs of many other community organizations and associations. In recent years we have hosted performances of Harmony Chorus and the Kansas City Women's Chorus as well as community Ash Wednesday and Thanksgiving Eve worship services.
Our free summer concert series in the church's Peace Garden draws crowds from the diverse Hyde Park neighborhood and provides a mingling space as well as live music. The church provides the hospitality of lawn chairs, popcorn and cold drinks. The genre of music performed at the once-a-month concerts varies from folk to rock to bluegrass to pop to jazz and gospel.
